Before I post a little something related to my post title, let me just say this...
THANK YOU TO ALL MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO MADE MY 25th (yes I am THAT young!) REALLY WONDERFUL AND AMAZINGLY FUN!
What with multiple birthday songs in one day (I got kinda sick of that song by the end of the day:S), FOUR cakes (ALL with CHOCOLATE!), flowers, presents and more chocolate as presents :P, birthday posts on blogs, friendster and facebook, and many, many bday SMSes... what more could a girl ask for?! :) Thanks guys for making me smile (and FAT!). A great birthday, I must say :)
Alright, back to the topic at hand...Bruneian culture... This was something I wanted to post about a while back, and then a recent conversation with Boss made me remember.
Ok, picture this... you're walking down Orchard Road (that's in Singapore by the way...) or some mall in KL (sorrylah, haven't been to KL in ten years!), and there are multitudes of people walking in both directions. You're carrying shopping bags (a girl's gotta shop in Orchard!) and trying to avoid bumping into stick thin girls carrying huge bags/ah lians/ah bengs/uncles in slippers/aunties and their children/yuppies/etc etc...and then accidently you DO bump into one of them. What do you do??
Being raised the BRUNEIAN way, I would fumble in embarassment and say "Sorry" and look very contrite. What do these people do?
WALK AWAY... with not even a look in your direction...Well, excuuuuuse me!
Even if they bumped into you, they just walk away, oblivious to the fact that they've probably given you a little ouchie (or worse, maybe even fatally wounding you! *gasp*) Would they care? I think not!Kena pushed pun inda cakap sorry?! Rasa kan umban beg ku arah kepala orang atu!
Grrrrr... angry much?
Which then brings to mind good ol' Brunei. Accidently bump into someone on the street, anyone... I can assure you that they will probably say "Sorry" to you too... See? Bersopan santun kali ah orang Brunei!
I'm quite proud to see we have quite a "caring" culture here, but then boss said this...
"In a few years time, that may not be the case anymore. The young ones today are quite bad" (you will only hear old people say something like this...)hehe
And I believe him. Kids today are not like how we used to be (oh no, I sound like an auntie!). They are quite free to do what they like, and most of them are spoilt and ill-mannered. Trust me, I see this in school.
So what happened? You can blame everything from the TV to the Internet, but for me, I also think it's the break down of the family unit. Many families are not providing kids today with a background that's caring, nurturing and safe. Everyone's left to their own devices...
Ask me and I will tell you this: I will raise MY family with good traditional values like respecting elders, calling your older relatives by their title (you know, chinese style: Big Uncle, Second Uncle, Youngest Auntie, Third Cousin etc etc), and teaching my kids how to be GOOD, LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS and CHRISTIANS by being a GOOD EXAMPLE myself... phew, talk about tough parenting :)
So in summary... I think us Bruneians have got it much better in terms of manners than our counterparts... but we're not too far off being just like them...Bisai-bisai tah anak-anak Brunei
